Concepts of Plan Review 101 for Permit Technicians

Duration: 14 hours – in person, two full days

Course Description:

This class is focused on over-the-counter plan reviews for single-story residential decks and patios, accessory structures (sheds, detached garages), walls and fencing, pools and spas, windows, and solar.

This is an introductory level class designed for permit technicians, inspectors, and entry level building department personnel wishing to understand the over-the-counter plan review process. 

Included is an overview of the plan review process including proven plan review concepts and construction and inspection terminology.

Topics will include over-the-counter reviews of various residential projects including decks, patios, sheds, garages, walls, fencing, swimming pool and spas, windows, and solar.

 What will be covered:

 Presenter's Bio:

Terry Knox is the Director of Development Services for Shums Coda Associates. He has been a Building Inspector, Plans Examiner, and Building Official. He brings his Programs to life with examples from his over 50-year career as a high-performing leader and manager in the Building Code and Administration world. He is noted for his ability to develop high-performing leaders and teams that consistently exceeded all measurements while having fun. He also brings a highly interactive and collaborative approach to all programs.

Terry has a Master's in Business Administration with a Minor in Construction Management, an associate of Arts Degree in Building Inspection Technology, and studied at the University of Wisconsin - Madison College of Engineering. He has served on the ICC Performance Standards Committee, ICC Exam re-write Committee IBC, IRC, IPC, IMC, author of countless code changes to both ICBO and ICC codes, Honorary Member Past President California Building Officials Association, elected to the California Building Officials Hall of Fame, Certified Postsecondary Vocational Instructor: JSRM-4W4LRY, Lifetime Junior College Instructor Certification. Served as Chief Building Official for various Jurisdictions throughout California. He received the Helen Putnam Award from the California State Assembly for Government Efficiency, the only time this award had ever been awarded to a Building Official.
